Please note: that using insurance to help pay for counseling will require that clients meet medical necessity for treatment, be provided a clinical diagnosis, which will be reflected on their permanent health care record. Insurance companies may also impose limits on the annual number of sessions, specify treatment modalities, and request all clinical notes, which impacts patient privacy. Please contact your insurance provider to request information about types of mental health coverage, copay or deductibles, and authorized number of sessions in order to help you decide whether you would like to pay using insurance or out-of-pocket.
3. What should I expect during my free consultation?
The first session is about 20-30 minutes, is free, and gives us both an opportunity to see if we would be a fit working together. It is important that you feel a sense of connection, trust, and safety with your therapist. I will be working for you, so feel free to ask me questions, discuss your concerns, fears, and what brings you to counseling at this time.
4. What are the risks and benefits of therapy?
To seek out therapy is an individual choice and receiving the support of a therapist can help clients gain clarity, insight, and understanding during challenging times of life or in healing from past trauma. However, therapy can also bring up painful memories or emotions, which may be painful or difficult to face at times. Sometimes, symptoms may temporarily get worse before they get better.
5. Is therapy confidential?
All communication between a client and psychotherapist is confidential and protected under state law, except in cases of imminent risk, child abuse, threat of harm towards another person, or court subpoena.
6. What does a typical therapy session look like?
Each session is fifty minutes long and is tailored to meet your individual needs. Counseling can be sought for short-term problems to assist with a crisis, major conflicts, important decisions, or relationship problems, as well as long-term concerns that address complex issues, such as unhealthy thought patterns, self-esteem, identity, long-term goals, and personal growth. I use a blend of modalities and techniques all depending upon your own comfort level. I am very client-centered and will check-in with you to gather feedback about how you feel about your progress.
7. What is your approach to counseling?
My approach is to work with my clients at their own pace, build a solid foundation, and uncover the root problems contributing to symptoms. I can provide brief, short-term or long-term counseling depending upon your goals. Symptoms and disorders often arise as a result of surviving difficult situations and attempting to cope with trauma and stress. The goal of therapy is to discover and develop healthier ways of coping with trauma. I also take a holistic approach to therapy, which consists of blend of modalities, including somatic therapy, existential and humanistic psychotherapy, psychodynamic techniques, dream interpretation, mindfulness, meditation, or self-hypnosis techniques, and rational emotive behavior therapy.

9. What is the difference between life coaching and counseling?
Coaching is more present and future-oriented, whereas counseling attempts to treat mental health problems, family of origin issues, intergenerational trauma, and often involves exploring how past traumas or events impact current responses. Coaching, on the other hand, is not therapy or mental health treatment, but can help assist in helping the client with life transitions, exploring healthier lifestyle choices, cultivating awareness of mind/body connection, and overcoming personal challenges. Coaching is more appropriate for individuals, who already have a strong foundation, but may need additional support or assistance in gaining clarity about life path, personal, or professional goals, as well as overcoming self-defeating behaviors and patterns.
10. How much does a coaching session cost?
$150 per hour session, but I also offer sliding scale.
11. What does a coaching session look like?
Coaching sessions are 1 hour long and depending up client's needs can be held on a weekly or biweekly basis. Coaching sessions allow clients to identify or adjust goals, creatively problem solve, and identify and replace self-defeating behaviors. Mindfulness, dream interpretation, creative writing activities, and active imagination are other tools that can be used during coaching sessions. Coaching helps clients tap into their creative potential, brainstorm, and prioritize goals.
